Who Has Scored Three Double Centuries In One Day Internationals

On July 9, 2019, a cricket fan in India scored three double centuries in one day internationals. This has never been done before and is one of the most unlikely records in sports history. But the reality is that anything is possible in cricket. Whether it’s an improbable record like this one or something more commonplace, reality can be surprising at best and confusing at worst. So how can you avoid getting caught off guard by reality? Here are a few tips to help you stay on top of things.

    Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has had some outstanding performances in ODIs. The island nation has produced some of the world’s best batsmen, including Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

On Sunday (July 2nd), three Sri Lankans scored double centuries in one day internationals – Sangakkara (200 not out), Tillakaratne Dilshan (202*) and Dinesh Chandimal (205*). These batting feats are unique in the history of One Day Internationals.

    England

On June 16, 2011, Zimbabwe’s Andrew Masakadza scored 299 against England at the Kensington Oval in London. This was the first double century by an individual in a one-day international. On July 3, 2012, Sri Lanka’s Thilan Samaraweera scored 281 against England at The Oval in London. This was the second double century by an individual in a one-day international. On February 15, 2014, South Africa’s AB De Villiers scored 304 against England at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. This was the third and final double century by an individual in a one-day international.

    Australia

Australia’s Mitchell Marsh has reached the 3 double century club in ODIs. He achieved this feat against Bangladesh on day 3 of the 4th ODI at the MCG. Marsh scored 229 runs off just 161 balls with 14 fours and 2 sixes. This is his 1st triple century in ODIs and also the 8th time he has scored 200 or more runs in an innings. This was his 4th consecutive 200+ run innings, which is a new Australian record. He also became one of only 9 players to score 200+ runs in 4 consecutive innings in ODIs.

    India

India has produced some of the greatest batsmen in history and their prowess with the ball is no exception. In fact, it’s not too far-fetched to say that India possesses one of the strongest bowling attacks in world cricket.

As recently as 2014, Virat Kohli led India to a 5-0 win over Australia with two double centuries (180 & 209) and an unbeaten 141*. This year, Rohit Sharma followed up his maiden ODI century against Sri Lanka with another knock of 191* to help India clinch a 3-1 series victory. With records like these, it’s no wonder why Kohli and Sharma are considered among the best batsmen in the world.

But which other India players have scored three double centuries in one day internationals? Let’s take a look:

    Virat Kohli (four times): 180*, 209*, 191*, 240*

Rohit Sharma (three times): 100* vs Sri Lanka, 191* vs Sri Lanka, 205* vs England

    New Zealand

New Zealand has had some pretty amazing innings in the past. They have players who can score quickly and easily, so it’s not too surprising that they have had some big scores. Here are three double centurys scored by New Zealand players in one day internationals:

    1. Martin Guptill – 2009
    2. Kane Williamson – 2014
    3. Ross Taylor – 2017
