Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced 2017 was held on Sunday and Monday in the country. The interesting part is that the minimum marks required to get admission into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year has been raised from 740 to 800 marks. This move, which was made as per the new National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Act, is expected to benefit a large number of students who have scored less than the revised minimum marks. The previous minimum requirement for JEE Advanced was 740 marks. Applicants who scored more than 750 but less than 800 could still apply for admission through the regional universities. Now, with the revised minimum requirement of 800 marks, only those students who score above 800 will be able to apply directly to IITs.
All India Institute of Technology (IIT) has announced that the minimum marks for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced will be 30 out of 40
The All India Institute of Technology (IIT) has announced that the minimum marks for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced will be 30 out of 40. This announcement was made by IIT Director Dr. Rajeev Kaul in a press conference on Thursday. The new requirement will come into effect from the next year’s entrance examination, which is set to be conducted in March 2019.
This change comes after the central government decided to make the JEE Advanced mandatory for all students who wish to take admission into IITs and other top engineering institutions in the country. Earlier this year, the Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had said that “all meritorious students, irrespective of their background, should have an opportunity to study at an IIT…It is our endeavour that every bright student gets an opportunity to study at an IIT.”
As per Dr. Kaul, this decision was taken after a careful assessment of available data and feedback from various stakeholders including universities, parents and students themselves. “We have taken this step keeping in mind that it would enable better opportunities for all students and also help weed out candidates with deficient scores,” he said.
Candidates who qualify with marks below 30 will now have to pursue an extra course called ‘Advanced Placement’, while those scoring between 31 and 39 will need to take a placement test before getting admitted into any IIT or other engineering institution in India. Those scoring 40 or above will not have to take any additional preparation.
This announcement has come as a bit of a shock to many students, as the previous requirement for the JEE Advanced was 36 out of 40. The new requirement will affect around 10% of the total number of students who attempt the JEE Advanced every year.
This is in line with the recently announced admission norms of IIT Kanpur, which states that a candidate must have scored minimum 36 out of 40 in JEE Advanced to be eligible for admission in programme
IIT Kanpur has announced new admission norms which states that a candidate must have scored minimum 36 out of 40 in JEE Advanced to be eligible for admission in the programme. This is in line with the recently announced admission norms of IIT Kanpur, which states that a candidate must have scored minimum 50 out of 60 in JEE Main to be eligible for admission in the programme. The other criterion for admissions into IITs has remained unchanged – a candidate must have secured at least a 50% aggregate mark in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination.
Candidates who score 24 and below will not be considered for admission into IITs
Candidates who score 24 and below will not be considered for admission into IITs. Candidates with ranks lower than 24 in the JEE Advanced will not be considered either. In order to get admission into an IIT, a candidate must have a rank of 45 or above in the JEE Advanced.
IIT is one of the most prestigious institutions in India and it is known for its high standards. It has produced some of the most brilliant minds over the years and continues to do so by attracting the best students from all over India. However, only a few students get admission into IITs every year as there are limited seats available for them. The minimum marks required for getting admission depends on several factors like cut-off percentage, total number of candidates who appear for JEE Advanced exam etc. So, let us understand how much marks you need to secure a seat at an IIT through JEE Advanced exam:
The minimum marks needed to get admission into IITs through JEE Advanced exam are as follows.
The minimum marks needed to get admission into IITs through JEE Advanced exam are as follows:
Physics-100 ( for general category candidates) and 97 (for reserved category candidates).
Chemistry-100 (for general categories) and 97 (for reserved categories).
Mathematics-100 (for general categories) and 97 (for reserved categories).

However, the minimum marks required for getting admission depends on the number of candidates who have appeared for the exam and the cut-off percentage. The cut-off percentage is calculated by taking into consideration various factors such as number of seats available in an institute, total number of students who have applied for it etc.
The cut-off percentage changes every year depending on these factors and may vary from one institute to another. It also depends on whether there are any reservations or not. If there are reservations then it will be higher than normal because more students will get admission under this category
Last year, in 2018, there were around 1,37,000 students who appeared for JEE Advanced exam but only 10,650 of them could secure admission into IITs.
Last year, in 2018, there were around 1,37,000 students who appeared for JEE Advanced exam but only 10,650 of them could secure admission into IITs. This means that about 89% of the students failed to get admission into any of the NITs or IIITs across India.
The minimum marks required to secure a seat in an IIT is usually 85% and it varies from year-to-year depending upon how competitive the exam is and how many seats are available (the number varies from institute to institute).
This means that if you want to get admission into an IIT then your scores should be high enough to secure a seat in one of the top 5 institutes of India.

If you score above 90%ile in JEE Main, then it is certain that your chances of getting admission into any IIT will increase manifolds. The actual cutoffs vary from year to year but they are usually between 99 and 100 percentile. The cutoff for some popular engineering colleges may be even higher than this range

IITs are some of the best universities in India and they have a reputation for being very difficult to get into. If you want to study at an IIT, then it is important that you prepare well for this exam so that your chances of getting into one are higher than those who did not prepare as much or as hard as yourself.
So, if you are planning to get admission into one of the top IITs then keep in mind that you must work hard and score good marks. It is not easy but it can be done with hard work and dedication.
